Understanding the Core Difference
One of the most frequent questions our technical support team receives from garage mechanics and factory maintenance supervisors is: 'Should I install a 2RS rubber seal bearing or a ZZ steel shield bearing?'
While both shield types share identical inner and outer dimensions and load ratings, their sealing mechanics and maximum speed capabilities differ significantly depending on the operating environment.
"Choosing the wrong seal type is the #1 reason for premature bearing failure. Using a ZZ shield in flooded monsoon roads allows water to wash grease away, while using a 2RS in extreme RPM applications can cause friction overheating."
When to Choose Rubber 2RS Contact Seals
Rubber 2RS bearings feature synthetic nitrile rubber (NBR) molded to a steel insert that makes physical contact with the inner ring raceway.

- ✓Superior Dust Protection: 100% airtight barrier prevents micro-abrasive sand and road grit from entering the raceway.
- ✓Slightly Lower Max RPM: Due to contact friction between rubber lip and rotating inner ring, max RPM is approximately 20% lower than open bearings.
When to Choose Steel ZZ Non-Contact Shields
Steel ZZ bearings feature dual pressed steel shields fixed to the outer ring that sit in a narrow groove without touching the inner ring.

- ✓Best for High RPM Applications: Electric motor rotors, alternator pulleys, wood router spindles, and cooling fans.
- ✓Zero Friction Drag: Since the steel shield does not make physical contact, friction torque is near zero and operating temperatures remain cool.
- ✓Higher Temperature Tolerance: Steel does not degrade, swell, or harden at elevated engine bay temperatures exceeding 130°C.
